This Was a Man

Had YOU been granted the unique opportunity to read YOUR grandfather's biography… would YOU??

This message will hopefully reach all of us who owe their very existence to
Isaac Ochberg z"l.

"Daddy Ochberg" was the 'father' of OUR forebears.

He was, therefore, OUR grandfather!

THE LIFE STORY OF ISAAC OCHBERG 1878-1937

A 2014 re-print of the original book by Bertha Epstein, (published 1974) by kind permission of the biological Ochberg family.

There are two major events indelibly engraved in our collective memories  - the rescue of the Ochberg Orphans from the perils of Eastern Europe in 1921, affording them new lives in South Africa, and the mammoth bequest to the JNF which established a record that stands to this very day.

But the story of Isaac Ochberg reveals very much more than this.

Editing the script according to the wishes of the Ochberg Family and composing the addendum together with my good friend, acclaimed compiler and champion of the Ochberg legacy and 'partner' in this venture, David Solly Sandler, presented me with the opportunity to re-read every word and to be inspired once again by the virtues of the man known to us as 'Daddy Ochberg'.

The author, Bertha Epstein, was Isaac's daughter so she would have been forgiven should she have embellished some aspects of her father's life.  However, this is not the case.  When she writes of his generosity, his character is reflected in the chapter listing his bequests. Proof indeed. Just some of the recipients of his generosity - local Jewish charities, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Jewish poor of Cape Town, recreation facilities for Cape Coloured children, dowries and wedding gifts for poor Jewish girls, the Salvation Army, Old Aged Homes, Hospitals, Hebrew schools and Zionist causes.

When she describes his business acumen, the chapters dealing with his derelict ship exploits, ventures into scrap metal, cinemas, elegant stores, brickfields, astute investments - among which was the manufacture of British army uniforms in WW1 - bear eloquent testimony to his foresight.

A lesser known story is that of HMS 'Penelope', a British battleship which lay stranded for many years close to the beach near Simonstown.  Isaac bought the ship, a move which brought some amusement to the locals, intending to sell it as scrap but, after a lengthy series of exploits well documented in the book, sold it in Genoa and realised a handsome profit.  "He spoke of this incident as one of his best achievements".

The tragic events of his personal life - his father killed in an railway accident, his mother stricken by a most virulent cancer, two children died young, two afflicted by an incurable disability, and his darling youngest daughter Ruth died suddenly, shortly after her 17th birthday.

The heartwarming account of the 1971 Golden Jubilee describing the overwhelming emotional event which enabled almost all the original orphans to renew acquaintance ends with this comment by the author - "For me too, it had been a most momentous occasion.  Honour had been paid where honour was due, with love and affection, in the living presence of my Father's greatest humanitarian achievement.  This had indeed been a Golden Jubilee to remember; the reunion of Isaac Ochberg and his beloved pogrom orphan children.  God bless them all."

In addressing you, my fellow descendants, I am acutely aware that I am preaching to the converted when I state that most of us have a sparse record of our family history pre-1921.  After all, our forebears were orphans.  I know how much I would value a manuscript detailing the life and times of my biological antecedents - perhaps a forlorn wish.  Possession of this book changes all that. I suggest that it warrants pride of place to grace the bookshelf of every family with an Ochberg connection.

If not for the fortitude of this one great man, we descendants would not exist. In the spirit of his legacy, proceeds of sales will be directed to Arcadia Orphanage in Johannesburg and the American Joint Distribution Committee (The Joint).

The book, THIS WAS A MAN is on sale now!

20-12-2012 marked the commemoration of the 75th yahrzeit of Isaac Ochberg - of blessed memory - in Cape Town. Hosting the ceremony was Lauren Snitcher and daughter Michaela together with the JNF and SAZF. Molly Cohen, the oldest living Ochberg Orphan at age 99, received the honour of unveiling a plaque to mark the event.

A 6-minute clip was filmed here in Israel for the Cape Town ceremony.  View it here -  (NB.  Great on Mac or iPad - question mark against the others!)

Along with festive season greetings from a member of Kibbutz Gal-Ed came a message that speaks of visits to Givat Even Itzhak, the impressive stone monument marking the original spot where the kibbutz first began.  It is approximately two kms from the present day, bustling, kibbutz and serves as a reminder of the legacy of Isaac Ochberg, albeit only in the memory of those familiar with the history of the area.  It is indeed a very impressive sight, somewhat off the beaten track, and will be the subject of fresh investigation on our part soon.

Givat Even Itzhak

And a message from the Gen Manager of Kibbutz Dalia, Shacham Mittler, in response to my greetings.

Hi Bennie

Good to hear from you!
Thank you for your good wishes and, on behalf of Kibbutz Dalia, I wish you, your family and all the descendants of Isaac Ochberg, a year of peace, happiness and good health.
We will remember the heritage that Isaac Ochberg granted to you, to us and to the State of Israel.

In friendship and respect,

Shacham

An important milestone was reached last Thursday with a presentation I made, together with Hanna Livne, the lady who designed the Ochberg Memorial Site and the surrounding project (more on this subject in future bulletins) to the senior 32 functionaries of the Tour Guides Division of the Ministry of Tourism.  This is part of our ongoing efforts to bring the Ochberg saga to the attention of all registered tour guides and to include the Memorial Site on their planning agendas.

Tomorrow, Thursday 20th, we are scheduled to meet with the senior staff of the Megido School (250 meters from the Memorial Site) to conclude plans for the inclusion of the Ochberg story in the school syllabus.

FACE BOOK

Lynne Ruch Michel posted in Ochberg Orphans and Descendants and Friends

This group was established to share information about the Ochberg Orphans and their descendents. It is open to anyone, in particular, descendents and friends of the Ochberg Orphans. All input is welcome and can be posted directly on the wall.
Should anyone wish to join the group, they may simply request to join with a brief introduction to themselves. And they will be made more than welcome.
We look forward to flourishing as a group, held together by a common bond - a deep gratitude to the legacy left by Isaac Ochberg - a legacy that has affected the entire shape of many of our lives.

Again, 'Hag Samea'h to you all!

Newsletter September 2012

NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2012

Shalom from Israel!

It’s been a few months since we last reported to you – the wonderful global family of all those who have been touched in  some way by the Ochberg orphan saga... a saga that has had a stirring beginning but happily - no end ......

And we are happy to report there has been ‘no end’ to our activities here as we meet frequently with the JNF/KKL, Ministry of Tourism, tour guide organisations and school boards involved in plans for the inclusion of the Ochberg saga in the curriculum for 14-year-olds.  Various individuals and organizations abroad have committed themselves to be part of the future of what will finally emerge an enormous and most impressive development at Park Ramat Menashe, where the 'jewel in the crown' will undoubtedly be The Isaac Ochberg Memorial Site. We would like to think that Isaac Ochberg z"l can only nod approvingly from his celestial perch.....

Hardly a week goes by without people calling our committee members asking for directions to the park – be they locals or visitors from abroad.
When possible and when they represent leaders in communities from abroad, every effort is made to host these guests so that we may address them.

Visitors to the Ochberg Memorial Site over the past few months have included -

Dennis Rudnick (a sprightly 85!) and son and daughter from Australia.  Dennis's wife, Edna, was regrettably unable to make the trip.  Edna’s mother was Salka Blind, Ochberg orphan, who arrived in Johannesburg in 1921 and went to live at the Arcadia Jewish Orphanage. Her name was changed to Sadie.  She married and became Sadie Saus.

Dennis read a moving tribute from  Edna while standing at the monument to Isaac Ochberg at the Site.
Dennis was a young soldier, arrived as a Machal volunteer,  during the War of Independence of 1948. He fought with Chativa 8 in Operation Yoav in the Negev.  After the war, in 1950, Dennis was recruited to join a group of technicians sent to the USA in order to bring to Israel the first Super Constellations which, upon arrival to Israel, marked the foundation of El-Al.

The DVD!!

Now that the DVD of the July 2011 2-day Ochberg Memorial Event finally reached those who prepaid at the time and endured the long wait, recollections have been spiked as evidenced by extracts from recent messages received.

This from Jerome Ruch of Cape Town -

"I have just had my first opportunity of watching the Ochberg DVD – it really brought the memories flooding back – I only wish it had been a bit longer and more in-depth.
Thanks to all concerned for putting this piece of memorabilia together and a special thank you to you for your continuous follow-up – all in all, it was a truly fantastic effort to condense so much into around a 30 minute DVD.
A perfect ending would however have been, showing everyone singing “Hatikvah” together at the “Hill of Names” – that would really have sent shivers and goose pimples down everyone’s spines."

And from Lynne Michel of Sydney -

"It was truly a mammoth task - brilliantly organised and well executed. We were all shellshocked for days after. I was so thrilled that the content of the event was so well thought out and delivered so well. We all gained much from our time spent there - it was well worth the long hike from Australia. Reconnecting with people from our past and making new friends (like the Nadelmans) who we now feel strongly connected to. It was especially meaningful for us to have three generations share that time and thankfully two of my four children were able to be there. They have learned a fortune about their (and all of the larger Ochberg descendent's collective history) and will now hopefully transmit this information to the generations below.
Thanks so much to all of you for an incredible job well done!

This presents a great opportunity to show the Hill of Names which is a major attraction of the Memorial Site:

Newsletter May 2012

Friends!

The past 3 months have seen a number of new and refreshing developments in our continuing efforts designed to perpetuate the memory of Isaac Ochberg.

The Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv - Bet Hatfutsot - now has the story of Isaac Ochberg recorded under "Personalities" on the museum's database facility.  Additionally, permission has also been granted to allow visitors to view the documentary "Ochberg's Orphans" on the museum's computers.

Visitors to the Ochberg Memorial Site in, and since, July 2011 - will have seen the square base designed to support the proposed observation tower, details of which were revealed at that time.  The structure was to be a modest wooden platform some 2 to 3 meters high.  We are pleased to advise that the updated plan provides for an elegant steel structure which will provide visitors with an unparalleled view of the surrounding area - including the original Isaac Ochberg Tract - from a height of almost 6 metres!  Visitors will have access to a viewing platform 5 metres square - with wheelchair access -  via a spiral construction supported by a central 9 metre steel pillar!!

Difficult to know how long this will last but I came upon this link which enables the viewing of the complete and original 58-minute version of the "Ochberg's Orphans" documentary from which many will have seen the edited version (38-minutes) which was entered for the 2008 Oscars.  Try it here - http://dai.ly/kkpa2W
This is an experience to be savoured!

We have had a number of fruitful meetings with the education division of KKL/JNF
and considerable progress has been made in our efforts to ensure that the Ochberg heritage be taught at schools and youth movements.  Appropriately, the pilot project will centre on the Megiddo area schools where the Memorial Site and kibbutzim Dalia and Gal-Ed are located.

Once again, we are acutely aware of the situation regarding the proposed DVD which covered the main event of July 2011 - the memorable 2 days of our gathering.  There have, regrettably, been a number of glitches causing incessant delays and the colour of this paragraph correctly reflects the colour of our faces. No effort is being spared to correct the situation!

An example of enterprise and positive thinking!  'Kol Hakavod' to the Romanovsky family of Edmonton, Canada for organising the upcoming Gala Dinner scheduled for June 24th.  The commemorative brochure will include an article on Isaac Ochberg by Sir Martin Gilbert, the eminent historian! Attendance is hoped to reach between 300-400 guests who are prospective donors to the fund-raising effort destined for Ochberg commemoration projects in Israel.
We wish them much success in this endeavour!

We are in regular contact with various tour guide organisations here who have responded positively to our recommendations and requests to have the Ochberg Memorial Site included on the agenda for the estimated 7000 accredited tour guides operating in Israel!

Please hold the date---20-12-2012!!!
Ochberg’s 75th Yahrzeit!!!
There will be a commemorative ceremony on that date at Maitland Cemetery where Kaddish will be held for Ochberg as well as an appropriate tribute to his memory.
